About Boulter’s Lock & Ray Mill Island

Boulter’s Lock is a lock and weir located on the River Thames. Ray Mill Island is located on the other side of the River Thames at Boulter’s Lock and provides some excellent scenery.

Boulter’s Lock was first built by the Thames Navigation Commission in 1772 and is located on the western side of the river between the main (A4094) Maidenhead to Cookham road and Ray Mill Island.

Boulter’s weir is located further upstream from the lock, at the northern end of Ray Mill Island. The area around Boulter’s Lock is one of the most popular whitewater freestyle kayaking areas on the River Thames, as it enables kayakers to play on it without causing disruption to other river users.
